This is wonderful on a cold night, especially when coupled with yummy grilled cheese sandwiches! Using flour, butter and milk make 2 -3 cups of heavy white sauce (I use abt 3 tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons flour, pepper to taste. Cook over medium heat until bubbly, then add 2 - 3 cups of warm milk gradually and cook until thick. Using either fresh or frozen tomatoes from the garden run thru a blender (or canned), very slowly (start drop by drop to avoid curdling the sauce) add the tomatoes stirring constantly. Heat only to piping hot .... do NOT boil. Ladle into bowls, add a generous amount of grated cheddar cheese and enjoy.
